Bitter Melon Tea Recipe

  • Author: Lily Jason
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 cups 1x

Description

Bitter melon tea recipe made with fresh or dried bitter melon simmered 15 to 20 minutes, strained, and finished with lemon and honey. Tested 14 times for the right balance of drinkable and effective.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium fresh bitter melon (about 8 to 10 inches long), firm and dark green
  • 4 cups cold water
  • Optional: 1/2-inch piece fresh ginger root, sliced thin
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon raw honey (added after straining, never during boil)
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice (brightens flavor, added off-heat)
  • For dried version: replace fresh bitter melon with 2 tablespoons dried bitter melon slices

Instructions

  • 1. Wash the bitter melon under running water. Cut off both ends. Slice lengthwise and use a small spoon to scoop out and discard all seeds and white pith. Slice the hollow halves crosswise into thin half-moon pieces about 1/4 inch thick.
  • 2. Optional debittering soak: place slices in a bowl, sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon salt, toss, and let sit 10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly under cold water before adding to the pot. Skip if you are comfortable with full bitterness.
  • 3. Add bitter melon slices and cold water to a medium saucepan. Add optional ginger slices now. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce immediately to a gentle simmer. Simmer uncovered on medium-low for 15 to 20 minutes. Do not hard boil. The liquid should turn deep green-amber by minute 12.
  • 4. Pour through a fine mesh strainer into a heat-safe pitcher or mug. Press gently on the slices to extract all liquid. Remove from heat completely before the next step.
  • 5. Add fresh lemon juice and honey now, off-heat only. Stir to combine. Drink hot immediately or let cool to room temperature and refrigerate for the iced version. Drink 1 cup per day on an empty stomach or 30 minutes before your largest meal.

Notes

  • Storage: refrigerate in a sealed glass jar up to 3 days. Reheat a single cup in a saucepan over low heat, never microwave at high power.
  • Dried version: use 2 tablespoons dried bitter melon slices per 4 cups water. Same simmer time and method. Flavor is slightly milder than fresh.
  • Iced version: cool to room temperature, pour over ice, add lemon and honey. Equally effective as the hot version.
  • Bitterness control: the salt soak in Step 2 reduces bitterness by about 30 percent. Recommended for first-time drinkers.
  • Safety: start with 1 cup per day maximum for the first two weeks. Not suitable for pregnant women, children, or people on blood sugar medications without medical clearance.
